A DRIVER in trouble for breaking a 30mph speed limit has claimed he is being unfairly treated and is organising a mass protest.

Darren Leeson, of Offmore Road, Kidderminster, was caught on camera doing 42mph on the town's Chester Road South last month.

He faces a £60 fine and three penalty points on his driving licence - but he says there are no signs warning southbound motorists on the road the speed limit has been changed to 30mph from 40mph.

Now he is urging others in the same position to contact him - so far almost 40 people have responded - and write to the Central Ticket Office in Droitwich which decides whether to prosecute motorists.

"These are just normal run-of-the-mill people who thought it was a 40mph limit until they had a letter through the door," said Mr Leeson, 32.

Engineer Mr Leeson, who needs his licence for work, said he is "not frightened" of going to court.

Wyre Forest MP Dr Richard Taylor visited the controversial site on Tuesday.

"All I can say at the moment is I think it's unfair that notification of a 40mph limit to a 30mph limit is made just by removing the 40mph signs." he said.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency, whose responsibility covers road signs, said: "The Highway Code points out where there is street lighting the speed limit is 30mph unless otherwise stated.

"If in doubt drive at 30mph."
