THE minor injuries unit at Evesham Community Hospital is up and running - despite new directional signs which say there is no A and E unit at Waterside.

Highway chiefs are to take up the misleading signs with their contractors and get them replaced after being contacted by the Journal yesterday.

Lesley Robson, at Evesham Community Hospital, said she had been made aware of the signs and added: "I have not got a clue where the signs have come from or even who is responsible for them.

"I can remember having a discussion some years ago about the lack of signs to the hospital and was told we would have to fund signs, other than standard signs ourselves. I had heard nothing since, until my attention was drawn to these new signs."

She said: "We don't have a major A and E department here, what we do have is a minor injuries unit which is fully operational."

Mrs Robson said: "No-one consulted us about the signs and we are upset that they are misleading."

Geoff Cox, of Wychavon Highways Partnership, said new signs containing the new road numbers were being put up in connection with -the opening of the Wyre bypass.

"We need to talk to our consultants and get them to check the hospital signs and we will talk to the hospital about what signs they need."
