AN intrepid mayor is getting physical in his latest charity effort.

Don Giles, 72, is planning three hours in the saddle on Sunday, October 20 as he cycles from Stourport to Worcester and back in aid of his mayoral charities - Kemp Hospice and Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau.

It is the Stourport mayor's second charity event following last month's concert by the Valentines Ladies Choir which raised almost £250. Stourport mayor Don Giles gets on his bike for charity.

And he has a novel way of securing sponsorship - going round pubs and clubs in the town to appeal to drinkers' better nature.

"In the convivial atmosphere of a pub people of my age contemplating a cycle ride to Worcester think it's quite something and cough up," he explained.

On his first night pressing the flesh Mr Giles came away from three pubs with £45 - and with 30 hostelries in total to visit the final tally could exceed £300.

"Ninety-nine per cent of the response I got was excellent," he said.

The 25-mile round trip should pose few problems for the cycling veteran and former Kiddermin-ster College physics lecturer.

"For 20 years I cycled to Kidderminster College - I started in 1973 when we had the fuel crisis and I did a total of 39,000 miles."
