A SCHOOLBOY had his lung punctured when he was stabbed twice in the back with a screwdriver by a 14-year-old during a late-night fracas.

The 17-year-old Kidderminster pupil spent four days in hospital after he was chased and attacked on the Spennells estate, Worcester Crown Court was told last Thursday.

His attacker, who admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent, later boasted about the incident to friends.

The boy, who had one previous conviction for theft, was put under supervision for two years with a condition he is electronically tagged and cannot leave home from 9.30pm until 6.30am daily.

Judge Anthony King said that had he been an adult, he would have received a sentence approaching 10 years. "It is only your age which has saved you," he said.

The attack happened at 10.30pm on February 24 after the 14-year-old and a carload of friends pulled alongside the intended victim, said Nicolas Cartwright, prosecuting.

The 14-year-old was armed with an iron bar and first of all punched the 17-year-old. He chased him saying "I'm going to kill you" and used a screwdriver to inflict the wounds. The iron bar was never found.

The injured youth managed to telephone his mother on his mobile and she drove him to hospital. Judge King said it was fortunate the injuries were not more serious.

Robert Canavan, defending, said the 14-year-old had been influenced by older members of his group. He did not initiate what had happened and only had the screwdriver because he had been working on a car.

He had not taken it as a weapon.

He was remorseful and apologised to the victim for his angry outburst, which was out of character.
