HOW unfair of Ian Morris of the UK Independence Party to describe Germany and Britain as the "givers" and all other EU members as "takers," on the question of our membership in the European Union (You Say, September 25).
His letter conveniently failed to mention the enormous European subsidies that the British farmers received throughout the 1980s for their produce. Later on, our farmers also received - and probably still do - more European subsidies for set-aside land.
These EU subsidies were so generous, that in some cases, British farmers were able to absorb the financial ravages of the BSE and foot-and-mouth epidemic.
If Ian Morris honestly thinks that Britain is being given a raw deal from Europe, then that's the more reason for Britain to integrate fully with the EU and fight for a better deal from within, instead of sniping from outside.
If we cannot do that in Europe, we are eventually going to be left out of the global economy.
