AFTER wowing the summer audiences at Spa's Norbury Theatre as miserable Scrooge, a versatile actor is taking on a challenging new role.

Martin Bourne has swapped the mean and miserly attire of Scrooge for the flamboyant and flashy lifestyle of a nightclub owner.

He is staring in the Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society production of Le Cage Aux Folles, which opens at the Malvern Theatres next Tuesday.

Martin, who is happily married with three children, is taking on the role of Georges, a gay nightclub owner in St Tropez.

Explaining how challenging the new role is, Martin said: "Georges is quite a difficult part to play because he is obviously a gay man and I am not.

"So trying to get into his way of thinking and not being too camp is quite difficult but it is very rewarding."

The show is full of extravagant costumes, tongue-in-cheek humour and memorable melodies including the classic anthem I Am What I Am, which was made famous by Shirley Bassey.

"I am looking forward to the production. It has quite a following and anybody who doesn't see it is really going to miss a good show," added 55- year-old Martin.

Theatre-lovers can catch La Cage Aux Folles at the Festival Theatre in Malvern. It runs until Saturday, October 19, with evening performances and a Saturday matinee.
