DEAR EDITOR - I read the headlines in last week's Droitwich Advertiser - "God's Gift to Traders?" - with considerable surprise and dismay.

I note and share the very real concerns for the future of the indoor market traders, but the article reveals some apparent misunderstandings about the present use of St Andrew's church.

It seemed to imply that there has been a suggestion to use the church building itself as a venue for the indoor market, but clearly the kind of worship which now takes place there could not continue in those circumstances.

It also suggests that the church is only used very occasionally, for 'civic services' - but this is far from being the case.

While for the last few years there has been no main Sunday morning service at St Andrew's at 10am, the church is actually used far more frequently and regularly for worship than any of the other three Anglican church buildings in the parish, with the majority of services being held on weekdays.

There are other regular meetings during the week involving several organisations.

I write only with my personal views and not as a representative of any particular group, and would certainly wish to see more extensive use of the church building in new ways for the benefit of the whole community.

I feel it would be enormously sad if, after a thousand years, the central position of God in our lives - as indicated by the presence on an active, worshipping church within the centre of the town, were lost.
