BRASSED-OFF youngsters are being urged to join an award-winning town band.

The Rubery Youth Marching Band, which recently swept the board in a national competition, is looking for enthusiastic new recruits.

The band took part in a competition in Southampton in September and were delighted to receive no less than six trophies, including overall best performance.

Since forming in 1983, they have performed all over Europe and played at prestigious venues including the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Next month the brigade, dressed in their uniform of scarlet and black, will lead the Remembrance Sunday parade in Rubery from the British Legion Club to St Chad's Church in New Road.

The parade will take place on Sunday, November 10, and after the church service the band will march back down New Road.

The band is looking for members of all musical ability.

Bandmaster Pete Maybury said: "We offer training from scratch, all we are looking for is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

"You must be aged between eight and 25 but we do make allowances sometimes," he added.

All training, uniforms and instruments are provided by the band and youngsters have the opportunity to take grade exams at the Guildhall of Music.

Practise takes place at Rubery Community Centre in New Road on Monday and Friday evenings from 7 to 9pm.
