THE mother behind a petition to get a pelican crossing near the school her children attend has vowed not to give up until one is in place.

Lynne Linder believes the speed and volume of traffic on Pickersleigh Road is a potentially fatal hazard for both parents and children at Great Malvern Primary School.

Mrs Linder, of Madresfield Road, came up with the idea for the petition last week with fellow parent Debbie Stanley.

"As it stands we're just writing the petition up and we've just started getting parents to sign it," said Mrs Linder, who has also written to Worcestershire Highways Partnership at Malvern Hills.

"We'll then see what the next step forward is, but it's going to be a long process. It's something we're serious about and I'm not going to give in."

Mrs Linder has two children - Zoe, eight, and Jessica, six - at the school and travels there and back with her one-year-old son James.

Parents and children using a nursery and after-school clubs are also affected, she said.

"I have the two children and a young baby going down to school a lot and it's such a dangerous road," said Mrs Linder.

"You get traffic going down to QinetiQ and DSTL and nobody stops. I want something done now."

She claims a crossing warden has even had his lollipop spun round by cars as he helped people across the road.

Governors at Great Malvern School are agreed the school needs a crossing and the campaigners are planning to approach The Chase High School nearby for support.

Worcestershire County Council last week revealed plans for two new zebra crossings near the northern end of the Twelve Apostles roundabout, in nearby Barnards Green, as part of the Government's Safer Routes To School initiative.

The plans were criticised by Malvern Hills Conservators at a meeting last Thursday who said they will not help local pupils and will not improve the look of the area.

It was suggested that an alternative location would be of more benefit. The crossings were originally planned to go on Conservators' land.
