THE unit where disgraced nurse Hugh Tangye abused patients closed down last year.

Worcester Christian Nursing Home's Topaz Unit was subjected to a six-month investigation by social services and the health authority in 2000.

The closure, in July 2001, was blamed on "draconian" methods used by Worcestershire County Council's social services to address problems there.

Mr Tangye left the home days after the incidents for which he was struck off, but before they were officially reported.

Admissions to the 29-bed unit, which cared for mentally infirm elderly patients, was re-opened after the investigation closed in October 2001.

But the nursing home has since been taken over by Southern Cross Healthcare and renamed Spetchley Park Nursing Home.

A spokeswoman for Southern Cross Healthcare said is was working closely with other agencies to ensure the home was providing a high standard of care.

"We welcome the fact the professional conduct committee has taken steps to remove a nurse from the register after a full investigation following allegations of professional misconduct," said a spokeswoman.

"Southern Cross is pursuing a policy of excellence to meet the highest standards in all our care homes.

The company took over Spetchley Park in February this year. Since that time we have put in place a new team of staff in whom we have the greatest confidence.

Southern Cross works closely with all agencies to ensure continuous high quality of care in our homes."
