THE Worcestershire Archaeological Society will commence their 2002/03 winter season of lectures on Monday, September 23, when Joe Hillaby, Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Bristol, will explain why Halesowen Abbey has a historical importance far beyond its local significance.
It is one of many hundreds of monastic institutions disbanded by Henry VIII in the 1530's. Currently under threat from residential development, the site could, with suitable management, become a prime historical resource for teaching the children of the whole West Midlands area about the history of their region.
Meetings of the society are held at the Bradbury Centre of the Worcester Association for the Blind, 2 Sansome Walk, Worcester, at 2.15pm. New members are always welcome, but visitors at any of the season's lectures are equally welcome on a payment of a charge of £2 per person.
Further details can be obtained from the secretary, Janet Dunleavey, on (01684) 565190.
