TOM Cruise abseiling down the side of Worcester Cathedral may not be out of the question following news of the region's first fund to support film-making in the region.

Regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands, is helping set up the region's first Production Loan Fund to encourage film producers to feature the cultural and geographical diversity of the West Midlands.

The fund, which will be managed by Screen West Midlands, the region's new champion for screen and new media business, is designed to support film making in the region.

It will allow producers and directors to take risks with new creative ideas, nurture local talent and use the region's highly experienced and talented crews and support teams while operating in unique locations.

"This is exciting news for the region," said Pat Laughlin, Advantage West Midlands' director of business growth.

Support

"The success which follows the availability of accessible funding has been demonstrated in Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and, recently, the Isle of Man.

"At the moment, if a production company needs access to funds, they leave the West Midlands to find support elsewhere."

She said the "knock-on" effects for the regional economy would be substantial.

"A film production can have economic benefit for the region's ancillary, service and tourism industries.

"It also has potential to enhance the profile and reputation of the West Midlands, develop a skills base for a more competitive workforce and retain scriptwriting and production talent in the region."

A total of £3m from Advantage West Midlands and the European Commission will help establish the fund.
