A RETIRED British Gas surveyor died from complications following a fall in a Worcester hospital.

Edward Tartaglia, of High Street, Pershore, was originally admitted to Worcester Royal Infirmary last October with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

At an inquest held at County Hall Worcestershire coroner Victor Round said the 80-year-old gradually deteriorated until his death from pneumonia in January this year.

"On Friday, December 28 he had a fall in Newtown Hospital," said Mr Round.

"He fractured his right hip and was moved to the Castle Street branch but wasn't fit for an operation. The pathologist Dr Geoffrey Smith, gave the cause of death as bronchial pneumonia due to immobility following a fracture of the right femur."

The inquest heard that Mr Tartaglia had fallen out of his bed and was found by members of staff on Cedar Wing, Newtown Hospital.

X-rays showed he had fractured his leg. Mr Round recorded a verdict of accidental death.
