A TRAFFIC scheme to make an accident blackspot safer is set to be given the green light.

Worcestershire County Council hopes the £50,000 project to re-organise the junction of Areley Common and Dunley Road in Stourport will be completed by next March.

It involves closing the slip road used by vehicles travelling to Areley Kings, which will all use the T-junction instead.

The slip road will be turned into a cycle lane.

Several accidents have happened in the past three years after cars indicating left have carried straight on past the slip road without cancelling their signal and collided with vehicles pulling out of Hermitage Way.

County council engineers also predict the scheme will cap drivers' speed as they drive into Areley Kings.

"We've been through a consultation process and we're now in the final stages of design," said senior project engineer Richard Attwood.

"We did a letter drop at premises in the area inviting comments and Stourport Town Council have responded with one or two comments. There have been no out-and-out objections."

Mr Attwood added he was confident the scheme, which will also involve improved street lighting, will prove effective and offers value for money.
