DEBTS across Wyre Forest have spiralled to record levels, with more people owing more money than ever before.

Shock figures from the district's Citizens' Advice Bureau show that debts topping £1.3 million had been rung up by just 97 people who sought help in the last year. Another 2,000 people were helped with less serious debts.

The true extent of the district's debt crisis is impossible to calculate, with many people struggling on in silence, said CAB manager Kate Bennett.

"The number of people affected by debt who cannot cope, and the amounts owed, are higher than ever. It is a very frightening situation for thousands of people."

Now the bureau has taken on two debt experts to help tackle the problem.

The posts are funded by Severn Trent's Trust Fund and Wyre Forest Community Housing - two organisations often owed money by debtors.

The trained advisers, Jenny Oliver and Darryl Madeley, are already dealing with 50 new cases and expect the number to rise in the run-up to Christmas.

They say a range of factors are responsible for the debt situation - including high levels of district job losses, a rise in relationship breakdowns and mental illness, and continuing easy access to credit.

There has also been a steady rise in the number of bankruptcies and the issuing of home repossession warrants.

"Many people don't realise that a relatively small debt can put their home at risk," said Mrs Oliver.

One Kidderminster man who approached the CAB this summer for help was threatened with losing his home over an unpaid £1,300 loan to a high street bank.

"Most people have debts of some sort but manage fine. Our concern - and the people we want to help - are those whose circumstances change, leaving them with less money, or who simply cannot cope."

She added: "We cannot wave a magic wand and get rid of the debts but we can assess the financial situation, negotiate repayment schemes with creditors and give support every step of the way."

The CAB, at 21-23 New Road, is open Monday to Friday. Outreach sessions are held in Bewdley, Wribbenhall and Stourport once a week. More details are available on 01562 823953.
