I WOULD like to support all those local people who will criticise the layout and the facilities at the new household rubbish tip that is now open near Throckmorton.

In my working life I spent over fifty years in the construction industry, nearly twenty of them as Senior COW in a large London Borough, and in all that time I have never known of a project built with such a lack of pre-planning.

Firstly it is constructed in reinforced concrete, which would have a working life of about fifty or more years. I wonder how much that cost the Council Taxpayers?

Secondly, has the designer ever tried reversing a small trailer about four feet by three? It is too small to be seen from the rear window and driving mirrors of a normal car, and the majority of people who use them are not professional drivers.

This is what caused me to sit in my car for twenty-five minutes, creeping up one car's length at a time, on the Tuesday after Bank Holiday.

The approach road to the disposal area must be over a quarter of a mile long, and there is plenty of room to place the skips on the near side at wide intervals, off the road but adjacent to the curb, where private cars could pull up with or without a trailer, empty their household rubbish and be away in a couple of minutes.

There is a road junction a few yards farther on which could accommodate a roundabout large enough for the largest lorries to turn, which would enable all the drivers to turn and drive away without reversing or loss of time, and probably no hold ups.

MR DONALD STEINER, Sally Close, Wickhamford.
