A SPA car dealers received a set back this week after the town council called for more information about a planning application to rebuild part of its property.

Droitwich Garage, in St George's Square, wants to demolish part of its buildings and rebuild them.

The new building at the front of the site would remain and the old buildings at the back would be knocked down and a new modern building erected.

At a Droitwich Spa Town Council meeting on Monday night councillors on the planning committee considered the plans.

While they said that they thought it was a good project for the company, which sells Saab and Seat cars, many raised concerns about the provision for staff parking and the unloading of transporters at the site.

The Mayor of Droitwich, town Councillor Terry Spencer (Con - Droit Central), said: "It is unclear on the current plans whether the company has made car parking provisions for its staff.

"I think we should ask this to be looked into because currently some of the workers are parking in Waterside, which is making some of the residents unhappy."

However Councillor Frank Payne (Lab - Droit West) urged the authority to embrace the plans and give them the go-ahead.

"Droitwich Garage has been in the town for many years and it would be such a shame if we pushed them away by not giving this application the go-ahead. I think we should whole-heartedly support it."

A motion was passed by councillors to defer a decision and to clarify their concerns.
