A NEW bid is being made to press for the early construction of the Squires Link road between the Worcester Road and Twyford around north west Evesham.

Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff and county councillor Clive Holt are seeking an urgent meeting with roads minister John Spellar to state the case for the need for the road.

Their request comes after the inclusion of a bid to the Government for funds to build the road in Worcestershire County Council's progress report on its five-year local transport plan.

Mr Luff said: "With the redesignation of the A4538 to the A44 after the completion of the Wyre Piddle bypass, significant increases in traffic volumes can be expected. The existing small twisting section of the road will become a strategic link in the national road network."

He pointed out there had already been serious accidents at the Worcester Road end of the existing road and the new road was an urgent necessity.

Mr Luff explained: "We found with the Wyre Piddle bypass that it was only by meeting ministers that we made progress. That is why the county council, coun Holt and I all think a meeting is so important."

Coun Holt added: It's crazy to have the main trunk road from Worcester to Evesham ending in a country lane with tortuous junctions at Greenhill and Worcester Road."

It is hoped that the meeting will take place by the end of October, before decisions on road building are made, probably in December.
