TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a popular Bromsgrove policeman who died suddenly at the age of 50.

Det Con Roger Powell, who was based at Bromsgrove, died on Bank Holiday Monday from heart failure.

He started his police career in Droitwich before moving to Bromsgrove, where he spent 19 years as a detective.

Colleague Det Chief Insp Steve Walters said he would be greatly missed.

"We were all very shocked by Roger's death," he said.

"I recall one particular case that we worked on together that involved a trip to the Crimewatch studio. It was a particularly nasty aggravated burglary, and we met with Jill Dando and the team in London.

"Roger was busy taking calls from the public while I chatted with Jill about the case."

Keen sportsman

Det Chief Insp Walters said Det Con Powell had served Bromsgrove well, and had been instrumental in solving many cases.

Away from the office, he was a keen sportsman and was captain of the Feckenham Cricket Club for some time. He also enjoyed walking his two Springer Spaniels.

"Roger was always friendly, approachable and quick-witted. He had many friends here and was well known," Det Chief Insp Walters added.

"He will be sadly missed by all of us here at the Redditch and Bromsgrove division and our thoughts are with his family," added Det Chief Insp Walters.

He leaves a wife and two grown-up children.
