A HOUSING development in Powick has been given the go-ahead by district planners despite objections from 29 local residents.

People living near to the site at 21 Bowling Green Road argued the proposed five homes would create extra traffic, making the narrow road dangerous for children and pedestrians.

At last night's Malvern Hills District Council planning meeting, councillors decided to support the outline application but ordered the new homes should be bungalows.

They also decided to scrap a mini-roundabout designed to improve safety at the junction of Bowling Green Road and Sparrowhall Lane.

Councillor Tom Wells said: "The roundabout is an absolute abomination. What the highways people are suggestion will create further urbanisation of Powick with all the signage and road markings which a roundabout would entail."

He said it would also cause more accidents than it would prevent as people used to driving straight along Sparrowhall Lane to the A449 would continue to do so.

Details regarding the siting and design of the homes, to be built following the demolition of the existing bungalow, will be part of a separate planning application.
