A NEW £13m hospital is in the pipeline for Malvern following a meeting of health chiefs yesterday.

The community health resource centre would replace the outdated hospital and include better facilties, including in-patient beds, a minor injuries unit and improved out-patient and diagnostic facilities.

The scheme was discussed by South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust (PCT) board and professional executive committee. "Members noted increasing operational problems of the present hospital due to the age and structure of the building while accepting that similar problems exist elsewhere in South Worcestershire," said trust press officer Janet Ferguson.

The increased costs to the PCT of the move to a community health resource centre could be up to £13m to build the facility and a further £2m a year to run the improved services.

Chief executive Mike Ridley told members an early decision should be taken by the board but in the context of overall service provision in South Worcestershire.

A project board will now review precisely what services should be offered in a new hospital and propose a way forward to the PCT board meeting on October 2.
