M C Randall recently referred to ex-footballer George Best, in less than flattering terms. The fact is that, in years to come, there will be many more like Mr Best.

These days highly remunerated professional footballers attend and sometimes brawl in night clubs.

Yet, from the late 19th Century to the early 60s, a player who downed just half-a-pint of beer during the season risked suspension.

Alas, in football, as in so many spheres, standards have collapsed in more recent years.

Also to be regretted, is the advent in the game of the players' agent. These people have a place in theatre, cinema and TV, but not in sport. These agents coerce club managements, often inept, into paying excessive, often obscene, wages to players.
