IT was a record year for GCSE results at Woodrush High School - the overall pass rate was 99.9 per cent, with 62.8 per cent of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades.

Headteacher Melanie Warnes said the "fantastic" results also bucked the national trend of girls doing better than boys.

"Almost 10 per cent of boys did better than the national average and there was not a great deal of difference between boys and girls here," she explained.

Top formers included Samantha Sheasby with one A*, seven As and three Bs, Ben Hickman with one A*, six As and four Bs, Abigail Poulton with two A*s, four As and four Bs and Adam Hickman who scored two A*s, six As and two Bs. Other top 10 students at the Shawhurst Lane school included Laura Cuff, who achieved one A*, five As and five Bs, and Douglas Reid with three As, four Bs and four Cs.
