A FAMILIAR face in carpet and golf circles has died aged 91.

Alan Lloyd spent nearly half a century in the UK carpet industry, having started as a trainee in 1929 with Birmingham firm Wilkinson and Riddell.

He spent 40 years with the company, becoming a carpet and furnishings buyer before taking over as showroom manager at Gilt Edge Carpets on Mill Street, Kidderminster, in 1970. He retired five years later.

Mr Lloyd had a lifetime's passion for golf and was a key member at the Kidderminster club.

He joined at the age of 10 in 1920 and went on to become president and captain.

He won the club championship 10 times and played for the England boys' team against Scotland in 1928.

In 1956 the Shuttle/Times & News described him as "the finest golfer Kidderminster Golf Club has produced in the past 25 years".

He was a scratch golfer but was also keen to encourage young talent.

Mr Lloyd was also a founder member of the Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association golf tournament, an annual competition held in Kidderminster to raise money to help workers and pensioners in the carpet trade.

And to mark his golfing dedication, the Kidderminster club held a dinner in 1995 to celebrate his 75 years as a member.
