A WELL-known Oscar Wilde comedy makes its regional film debut in Malvern next week.

The Importance of Being Earnest is hailed as "an irresistible romp with comic bite and wit" and its gala premiere takes place on Thursday, September 5, before hitting cinemas nationwide on Friday, September 6.

The famous comedy of high society and morals tells of two young women who insist they can only fall in love with men named Earnest.

Their admirers must overcome the highest of obstacles in the name of love, with hilarious consequences of equally insane proportions.

This latest film version features Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Frances O'Connor, Tom Wilkinson, Anna Massey and Edward Fox.

A Malvern Theatres spokesman said: "What more perfect place to enjoy an evening of Victorian gentility and entertainment than in the stunning setting of the 19th century spa town of Malvern?

"The timing could not be better because in the same week Edward Fox, who stars as Lane the butler in the film, will be appearing at Malvern in The Winslow Boy.

"He has also been invited to join the gala celebrations."

The programme includes a champagne reception in the foyer at 8.15 followed by the film screening at the Forum Theatre at 8.45pm. There will also be a "period-style" buffet afterwards.

Admission costs £18 for two glasses of champagne and admission to the film or £35 including the post-film buffet.

Booking is on 01684 892277.

Filmgoers are invited to wear evening dress and 20 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund.
