TOURISM chiefs will help Pershore town councillors decide on temporary provision of tourist information.

At last Thursday's meeting, councillors agreed that fellow members Marion Freeman, Val Wood and Peter Wright, should contact the Heart of England Tourist Board for advice on how tourist information should be distributed in the town. They are expected to report back to the town council at its next meeting.

The town council stopped using travel agent Wanderers' World as a tourist information point earlier this year. Since then the town has been running without a dedicated service but it is hoped a service will be re-established in the new town hall, which is projected to open next spring.

Coun Freeman said she had been going to Wanderers' World once a week to pick up correspondence regarding tourism. She also said that other places in the town were receiving inquiries.

She said: "The library has taken an awful lot of inquiries and some people have said they were amazed that Pershore didn't have a tourist information centre."

Mayor Richard Hampton said: "I don't think we've enough money to employ another person to run a tourist information centre. We can do what we are doing now but become a little bit more expert at it."

His view was shared by coun John Grantham, who said: "We don't need an all-singing, all-dancing tourist information centre but we need one that's big enough."

Town clerk Ken Myers, who has been helping to provide a limited service from the Belle House council offices, said most people wanted Pershore information but one or two people had gone away "disgruntled" because they wanted information about other places.
