FOR the first time since last year's foot and mouth crisis, live lambs have been exported from Dover, despite the public protests against this trade.

Coming on the back of the disclosures that the foot and mouth epidemic cost the taxpayer billions of pounds in compensation and clear-up payments, it is surely time to tell the farmers "enough is enough". They are losing our sympathy.

The farmers fully realise the suffering their animals endure in severely over-crowded trucks, often without food or water, for journeys which last for 40 hours or more.

I would urge anybody who wants to help stop this trade to call Compassion in World Farming on 01730 268 863. They are organising many protests and Government lobbies to fight this cruel business, and they need all the help they can get.

I am sure we all want to see farming go forward in a way which is humane and sustainable, and not tarnished by the cruelty of live animal exports.
