GUESTS were evacuated after an electrical beer pump sparked a fire in a hotel basement in the early hours of Tuesday.

Twenty-five people were ushered out of the Stourport Manor Hotel, Hartlebury Road, Stourport, after staff alerted the Fire Brigade at 5.40am when smoke was discovered coming from the cellar.

Crews from Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport fought the blaze while guests assembled in the hotel's separate leisure complex until they were given the all-clear at 7.15am.

"The fire didn't spread and at no time were guests in danger," said station officer David William.

Hotel manager Nigel Mather praised employees for their response.

"The staff on duty prevented a lot more damage and more importantly were able to get everyone out safely and call the Fire Brigade."

He added: "There was smoke damage to the bar area downstairs."
