SAILING: Light and fickle winds made for frustrating conditions at Trimpley Sailing Club.

Five boats turned out with newcomers as Tim and Elliot Mack beat Richard Turnock and crew Liz in the first GP14 race of the afternoon.

The Macks won the second contest as the winds fell even further.

In a rare appearance as a single-handed sailor, Mike Stout defeated Colin Hill on the line in the Laser class.

It followed Hill finishing on what the race officer considered the wrong side but he then competed alone to take the second of the afternoon series.

Light winds helped the lightweight crews and the Fletcher combination proved difficult to beat, outsailing the experienced Eric Grimwood and Mick James in the first GP14s contest.

Club commodore John Dixon held off the Fletchers in a tight second race to win by a mere 30 seconds with the next boat of John Hingley and Janet Cooksey nearly seven minutes behind.

In the final GP14 race, Hingley gained revenge by beating the Fletchers by 20 seconds.

Glen Caulwell was the only single-handed GP14 sailor in the afternoon's first competition.

In the Laser class, John Cookson won twice and Tom Jeffs once but newcomer Ian Davies kept in touch, finishing 55 seconds behind in the second race and easily winning on handicap.
