THE body that represents pubs and hotels in the city has found success with a new course for door supervisors.

The Worcester Licensed Victuallers Association had nine successful candidates on the recent Door Supervisors Training Course.

Worcester LVA premises with a public entertainment license must have trained staff who are then able to register with the council as supervisors.

"The LVA is very aware of the need for staff training," said Linda Griffin, who runs the Swan with Two Nicks, in New Street, Worcester.

"However, if you're a small stand-alone business, it's not always easy to access affordable and convenient training.

"The days of the 'bouncer' on the door are fading fast, with more emphasise on verbal skills and legal knowledge. It's also very apparent that more and more women are taking an active role in the security aspects of licensed premises."

She said that, already, several people were waiting to enrol on the next door supervisors course, due to take place on Saturday, August 24.

The LVA also runs courses on basic food hygiene, health and safety and bar retailing skills.

The courses are open to non-members, although LVA membership does entitle members to beneficial rates.

"They're open to everyone because the LVA recognises the need and expectation for training as the way for standards to improve for everyone," she said.
