LEOMINSTER sisters Linda Smith and Tracey Powell made history when they toppled Colchester's 2000 England and British Champions Liz Tunn and Brenda Brown to take the National Express Women's All England Pairs Bowls title at Leamington.

Smith, 52, and Powell, 40, became the first sisters to win an English national title and also sent another record falling when they became the first females wearing trousers to win a championship.

New rules brought in this year enabled competitors to choose to wear trousers rather than the traditional skirts and Smith and Powell celebrated in style, sporting all white outfits as they took the scalps of the more traditional attired rivals.

The Leominster pair gave Herefordshire its first national title in 23 years with a 22-14 triumph. They will now go on to represent England in British Isles Championships at Ballymena, Northern Ireland, next summer.

After the match Powell said: "When we built up a 12-0 lead in the final it seemed to good to be true. But hey pulled back shots to reduce the deficit to 14-10, but we managed to weather the storm and pull away again in the final stages."
