AN unusual garden feature is causing a stir in a Worcester neighbourhood in the shape of a 14ft flagpole.

Councillor Margaret Layland bought a Union Jack and a St George flag during the World Cup and Golden Jubilee when a rep called at her workplace.

Although the Union Jack was delivered after the Golden Jubilee, the two flags have been flying high at the front of her house in Broadway Grove, St John's, ever since.

"My husband Colin decided he wanted a flagpole," said Coun Layland, who works as a healthcare assistant in DG Pharmacy, Dines Green.

"We now fly the flags alternately, sometimes the Union Jack and sometimes the England flag. There's no mistaking our house now!"

Coun Layland said the idea started as a patriotic gesture and has been a permanent fixture ever since.

"A lot of people hung flags out of their windows during the World Cup, but it is unusual to see it on a flagpole," she said.

"Colin has joked I will have to salute it, and next door have joked they will come out one morning and see my long johns on it!"
