A SCHOOLBOY'S battle to curb speeding traffic has finally paid off with 30mph signs being painted on a Worcester road.

Oliver Mills, from St Peter's, was so fed up of nearly being knocked off his bike by traffic in St Peter's Drive that he wrote to Worcestershire County Council to ask for traffic calming measures.

But although the county council pledged to carry out work and paint two 30mph signs at either end of St Peter's Drive, the work was delayed.

The Transportation Partnership said surfacing work was not normally carried out between November and April and the signs would be in place before winter.

Now the signs have been put down in red thermoplastic paint.

Oliver's grandfathe, Eric Brown contacted the Evening News to say the signs had been painted in on Sunday.

"I saw the contractors painting the signs," said Mr Brown from Raven Drive.

"This was Oliver's initiative, he did not get any prompting from his parents.

"He has achieved this himself."

Mr Brown, aged 69, said the 30mph signs would remind motorists of the maximum speed limit but said he would like to see cameras on the road to really make a difference.
