THE Department of Health has confirmed that Anthony Marsh will be chief executive of the new West Midlands Ambulance Service when it is created in July.

The appointment follows a major reorganisation of the ambulance trusts in England. From July 1, Hereford and Worcester Ambulance Trust will join with Coventry and Warwickshire Ambulance Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service. Staffordshire Ambulance Service will merge at a slower pace due to the strength of opposition to the proposals in the county.

Mr Marsh started his career in the ambulance service in 1987 and he has held a number of senior posts since then.

He has an MBA, and a MSc in strategic leadership and is currently studying for a doctorate in professional studies in health.

Since Mr Marsh took up his post in 2003 as chief executive of Essex Ambulance Service, it has been awarded three stars by the Healthcare Commission. Previously the trust had been zero rated.

The trust has also won a national leadership award. Mr Marsh is a firm believer in leadership development for all.

No one from Hereford and Worcester Ambulance Service was available to comment on what the news would mean for current chief executive Russell B Hamilton as the Worcester News went to press.
