ONE of the world's greatest tenors, Jose Carreras has agreed to sing in Cheltenham, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, next year.

The Saturday, July 5 event at Cheltenham Racecourse, the major opening event of the Cheltenham Music Festival, will be exclusively in aid of the Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy Fund and the Jose Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation.

The intention is to sit 6000 people under cover and in boxes in the race course stand, and tickets will be available later in the year.

"Securing the services of Jose Carreras is a major coup for the charity and the concert is likely o attract interest throughout the country and more particularly in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties," said LINC spokesman Clive Thomson. "Funds raised will provide substantial support for leukaemia patients."
