THE body of a 14-year-old boy has been pulled from a Worcestershire lake after a fishing trip turned to tragedy.

Fire and ambulance crews were scrambled to the scene, but the youngster could not be resuscitated.

It is believed that the teenager waded into the shallow water to retrieve a fishing float and fell into difficulties.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade said the alarm was raised at 9.30pm yesterday.

"We were called to Lower Broadheath Fisheries in Martley Road after receiving information that a boy was in the pool," said the spokesman.

The mobile emergency tender, two fire appliances and a Land Rover, towing the brigade's small inflatable boat attended the accident, which happened in the lakes behind Vamix, formerly Broadheath Foods.

It is thought that the teenager had been fishing with friends in a lake at Lower Broadheath.

"We don't know the circumstances of how he got in the water, but it shelves away quite steeply and it's thought to be about 40ft deep in the middle," added the spokesman.

"The boat was launched and carried out a search to try and locate the lad.

"We managed to recover the boy, but it was some time afterwards because he had slipped down into the depths of the lake."

The young victim was pulled from the lake around one hour later.

Ambulance crews tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

He had not been formally identified and John Jordan, who owns the lakes, was unavailable for comment as the Evening News went to press.

Worcester police were still at the scene investigating the teenager's death, and a report was due to be sent to the Worcestershire coroner today.
