THE swimming pool at North Bromsgrove High School could be one of several at schools that may be drained and left unused it was revealed. The cost of ongoing repairs and maintenance was proving too costly for the cash-strapped county council.

BROMSGROVE and its surrounding villages had celebrated the Queen's Silver Jubilee in great style. Those that did not attend one of the many street parties, fetes, flower shows or galas or scores of other public events, flocked to the town centre to watch the carnival procession pass by despite the miserable, cold weather. A dance in the draughty Market Hall that had got off to a slow start was livened up by a young female streaker who cheered up the onlookers, if not the event officials.

THE former Georgian vicarage in Kidderminster Road, a few yards from the bottom of Adam's Hill, was sold by auction for £34,000. The five-bedroomed property was surrounded by 1.4 acres of landscaped gardens.

THERE was growing concern at the loss of trees in the Bromsgrove and Droitwich areas and elsewhere in the county, which lagged behind many other rural counties regarding numbers. It was said that if replanting was not undertaken soon the landscape in 25 years' time would be very bleak. In the combined counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, some 250,000 mature elms had succumbed to disease and had then been felled.
