A FORMER Worcester resident says he is so incensed by plans for an asylum centre in the county he is arranging a meeting to discuss action.

John Willett, who now lives in Cheshire, says the scheme is a "disgrace".

He wants the county's residents to stand up to the Government and fight plans for Throckmorton.

"It's of national importance that this is rejected as it is not meeting the requirements of local needs," he said.

"I'm a very angry man. I've been to Throckmorton and seen the For Sale signs and it's a disgrace on the countryside."

Mr Willett is hoping to arrange a meeting at The Guildhall in Worcester.

"These plans will set a precedent for other areas of the country," said the 61-year-old.

"Land is left open and anybody can put a proposal in and do anything they want.

"What is around this site is agricultural and the community expects something better."

Throckmorton was confirmed as being one of three sites to be transformed into an asylum seeker holding centre in May.

Residents of the surrounding villages have already formed an action group called PACT - Protest at the Asylum Centre in Throckmorton.

A rally was held on land opposite the site on Sunday, May 19.

The land has already been used by the Government to bury 130,000 animals culled during the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The meeting has yet to be arranged but Mr Willett said he would ensure it would be publicised in order for people to have their say.
