A WORCESTERSHIRE wine company is looking forward to a right royal commemoration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Willraynes Wine Company, in Pershore, has produced a limited edition Golden Jubilee port presentation box.

The company has been given special permission to reproduce the Queen's image on the label.

"This isn't usually the rule as members of the Royal Family don't allow their image to be reproduced on alcoholic products, even if they do enjoy a glass of wine occasionally," said Mike Richmond, who has been in the wine trade for 30 years.

The special honour was bestowed because of the company's royal connections, which go back six years.

In 1996 it was commissioned to supply the Royal Yacht Britannia with limited edition port presentation boxes to commemorate the decommissioning in 1997.

"We designed and produced one box to final specification. This, we were told, was taken on board the yacht for the Queen to approve," said Mr Richmond.

"We then supplied 250 of the presentation boxes for the valedictory voyage of the Royal Yacht, via Hong Kong, which, at the time, was being handed back to China.

"A further 1,000 boxes were supplied to the yacht for the decommissioning ceremony."

It was because of this precedent that the company approached Buckingham Palace with a request to produce the Golden Jubilee presentation port.

"Because of the success of the Britannia edition, we were given the go-ahead to create the Golden Jubilee box," said Mr Richmond.

"We had only three days in which to produce a final prototype to be submitted to the Palace for approval.

"This meant we worked through the weekend and, using lots of card and glue, we designed and built the final box."

The satin-lined presentation box is burgundy with gold edging. Engraved on the lid in gold is the Royal Crown and the inscription: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - Golden Jubilee 1952-2002.

The port is from the House of Ferreira, the oldest port house in Portugal, and the bottle label carries an image of the Queen and the same inscription that is on the box.

The boxes are limited to just 1,000 world-wide, with each one having a numbered certificate of authenticity.

They are due for release by the end this month, and Willraynes will be making a contribution from the sale of the boxes to The Queen Mother's Charitable Trust and Jubilee Appeal for Commonwealth Veterans.
