I SEE nothing in Peter Nielsen's letter, published in the Evening News, to warrant the ensuing actions of the executive committee of the regional Labour Party resulting in his de-selection.

The Labour Party is a democratic institution, and all its members are entitled to a political point of view.

When there are questions or criticism of the apparent direction of party policy, it is a healthy sign - it shows that people are using their intelligence, rather than merely following a line set down by the Party at national level.

There is no point raised in Mr Nielsen's letter that I haven't seen or heard discussed at all levels during the last year or two.

The directions of "New" Labour policies is of central and current interest, not just to activists but also to rank-and-file voters.

There's nothing wrong with this - indeed, it is democracy in action.

Further, even if the regional Party chooses to take exception to views expressed by a member on national issues, I fail to see what this has to do with his suitability or whatever to stand as a candidate in a local election.

If Claines ward and Worcester Labour Party were prepared to endorse Mr Nielsen's candidature some might view anybody else's intervention as undue interference.

Everything in this affair points to one thing - a clumsy attempt to muzzle a Labour Party activist.
