THE big news in Malvern a century ago was a visit from a member of the Royal Family.

Yet in truth, it was not much of a visit, for Princess Henry of Battenburg was merely passing through, on a journey from Eastnor Castle to the train that was to take her from Great Malvern station to London.

"The townspeople rose to the occasion in the way that might have been expected," reported the Gazette.

"There was a fine display of bunting on the route through which the Royal carriage passed, a large crowd assembled to welcome the princess and to crown the proceedings, the weather was brilliant."

The Princess was welcomed at the station by "leading residents, magistrates and members of the district council".

The council clerk, Mr Boyce, gave an address of welcome, a copy of which, bound in blue morocco, was given to the princess, who replied "I thank you".
