THE launch of new digital audio guides at the Elgar Birthplace Museum was heralded by the raising of the Union Flag up a new flagpole on Wednesday (May 15).

The palm-sized guides at the Lower Broadheath museum detail Elgar, the man and his music. The technology means the

tour is flexible and visitors can choose the order in which they see exhibits, opting to listen to more details or music using the built in keypad.

"The generosity of an anonymous benefactor and two recent bequests have provided the funding for this audio guide," said David Bowerman, chairman of the Elgar Foundation, which manages the museum.

"We're sure it will add to our visitors' enjoyment and understanding."

Dame Janet Baker, well known for her interpretation of Elgar's music in her singing career and who opened the Elgar Centre in 2000, has recorded the introduction to the tour.

The voice of Elgar in the guide has been provided by actor Gabriel Woolf, while the narrator is Charles Collingwood, better known as Brian Aldridge in The Archers.

The raising of the flag not only launched the audio guides but christened the new flagpole, provided by volunteer John Lapworth.
