St James' Church, West Malvern will be the venue for yet another outstanding musical event on Wednesday, June 5 at 7.30pm, when the Australian tenor Christopher Lincoln will present a programme of favourite songs and arias from Puccini, Verdi, Lehar, Romberg, Bernstein and other composers. Christopher Lincoln was born in Canberra and studied with Dame Joan Hammond. After performing for some years in Australia and New Zealand he moved to Germany and has since sung major tenor roles in opera houses throughout Europe and the USA. He is currently performing at the Deutsche Opera am Rheon in Dusseldorf.

Through his personal friendship with David and Mary Constable of West Malvern, he has been an occasional visitor to the village over the last ten years where, he says, he indulges in hill walks in all weathers and lots of local cheer. Many people remember the superb performance this fine lyric tenor gave in the church in 1998, and have been hoping for the possibility of a return visit.

The event has been arranged by the Friends of St James' Church, with all proceeds going to the church building fund. Relaxed informality is likely be the theme of the evening, with the artist himself introducing the items.

Tickets (£7.50, concessions £6) will be available in advance from Yvonne Clayton at the Foster Care Cooperative next the Village Stores (tel: Malvern 892380) and at the door on June 5, and will include light refreshments. Children accompanied by an adult are free.

Failure of the church heating system did not spoil the enjoyment of more than 60 people - including a visitor from Tulsa, Oklahoma - who attended the Jubilee celebration recital by Worcester organist John Wilderspin on Saturday. Charmingly introduced by the performer, who gave his services free, the event raised £250 for the Friends of St James's Church towards the church building (boiler?) fund.

If the church has heating problems, things in that department have greatly improved at the Village Hall with the installation of a new, more efficient and quieter heater. This was much appreciated by the parish council at its marathon annual meeting on Monday, which lasted until nearly 11pm. Mrs Joyce Roberts of Kandersteg, Park Road, was elected unopposed as chairman for the next 12 months in succession to last year's chairman Colin Jackson. Previous vice-chairman Eric Hollands was re-elected, also unopposed.
