UNLOCKING the deepest and darkest thoughts of some of the most notorious inmates in Worcestershire's Long Lartin prison is the aim of a new radio documentary.

The BBC Hereford & Worcester team went behind the walls of the jail, near Evesham, to find out about life in the cells for three long-term inmates.

Describing its winding corridors and strange curved walls as akin to an alien setting from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, producer Howard Belgard says listeners will be captivated.

"I hoped that some of the things these men would say about their own cells would be surprising, controversial, enlightening or moving. I wasn't disappointed," he said.

"This programme will challenge anyone's preconceptions about life in prison."

Each inmate speaks frankly about their relationship with a space just seven feet square.

This forth programme, in the Sense of Place series will be broadcast on 94.7, 104, 104.6 FM on Sunday and at noon and repeated on Wednesday May 22 at 1.05pm.
