Re the letter's page - white knuckle ride. In response to Mr George Rowlinson's letter I appreciated the humour. I agree some criticism is understandable but some of your comments may be premature?

After inspection by Highways staff and the contractor, the contractor was instructed to return and correct a number of surface defects, attend to two areas of road that have deteriorated since the original works were ordered and attend to damaged verges.

But the patchy nature of the job is intentional; this is phase one and has put sufficient foundation into failed sections of the road to last several years. Phase two, in a few weeks time, will cover and seal the whole road with surface dressing. After a few weeks of aftercare, a satisfactory outcome is anticipated.

The County can only apologize for the contractors' disappointing productivity and the inconvenience. But I am pleased to inform you there has been no additional cost to the taxpayer because of this.

Enjoy the rides whilst you can but leave the final verdict until July when the surface dressing has had time to settle down.
