Villa Aztecs Ladies 3 Redditch United Women 6

A DEPLETED Villa team took on an injured Redditch side whose numbers were bolstered by reserve team players, Caroline Staples and Sue Fletcher.

Redditch took the initiative from the off when captain Sam Tayler's shot was fumbled in by the goalkeeper. The Aztecs equalised soon afterwards with Redditch keeper Rachel Buckley, saving the first attempt at full stretch but unable to reach the follow-up.

Redditch pressed forward and were rewarded when an excellent cross from Becky Ankcorn was steered into the top right hand corner of the net by Sonia Crow. Redditch reached half-time with a 3-1 lead thanks to a superbly taken goal by top scorer Mandy Ellicott.

The Aztecs came out for the second half more determined and were rewarded very early on when they scored after some good passing football. Not to be deterred, Redditch pressed forward with Ellicott adding two more goals to bring her tally for the season to 30.

Redditch were then forced into a change with Tayler taking over in goal. The Aztecs never gave up, but were thwarted time and again by some good defensive work by Lucie Staniland and excellent saves from Tayler. Villa did eventually manage to pull another goal back, but with the game coming to a close, Natalie Plant raced onto a through ball after some fine passing play, to slot in number six. Player of the match was Lucie Staniland.

As it is unlikely that the last fixture against West Bromwich Strollers Ladies FC will be played, Redditch will end their season in 7th position.

Redditch United Women's Reserves have also played their final game in a league that took them as far away as Crewe. After a steady start in their inaugural season they finished 9th in their league and their team spirit and determination are applauded by all at the club.

Redditch United Women's FC are planning to extend their club and are seeking a suitably qualified management team to take charge of a new team. Applications are very welcome from any interested parties to join this friendly, progressive, well-established organisation who are proud to say they are the largest women's football club in the county.
