GREEN volunteers in Cleeve Prior are celebrating a successful season of Action Earth days improving their village environment.

Over the last three months they have planted a hazel coppice on the village's community orchard, created a shrub area to provide wildlife habitats on their Millennium Green, established a tree nursery including fruit trees and disease-resistant native elm trees, improved the village's community wildlife garden by replacing plants and relaying a bark path, maintained the Greenlink footpath, mounted a display of environmental projects and started work on a well-dressing event planned for July.

The activities were part of a three-month campaign called Whitbread Action Earth, organised by the national charity Community Service Volunteers, co-ordinated by Lin Warren of Cleeve Prior Heritage Trust, who thanked the dedicated core team in the village and other volunteers who helped.

She said: "Helping out on an environmental project is a great way to learn new skills and at the same time to do something really worthwhile. We are grateful to everybody who helped make the Whitbread Action Earth days such enjoyable and productive events."

Organisations and communities interested in taking part in next year's campaign can call the Whitbread Action Earth hotline on 0121 328 7455.
