DR Richard Taylor is a key player in a new cross-party group of politicians which looks set to give "teeth" to the National Flood Forum.
The Wyre Forest MP has been appointed vice-chairman of a group of about 15 MPs from across the country set up to share information and expertise on flood-related issues.
Worcester MP Michael Foster is the chairman of the group, while John Grogan, who represents Selby in Yorkshire, has been appointed secretary.
The group developed from one set up by MPs - including Dr Taylor - whose constituencies lie on the River Severn. Its first meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 2 in London.
The National Flood Forum was officially launched at a House of Commons seminar hosted by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology on managing flooding as part of a Government consultation.
Chairman Peter Barnett was one of a number of speakers, along with Environment Secretary Elliot Morley.
Since then the forum has held its first meeting, attracting representatives from groups in Yorkshire, Sussex, Hampshire, Somerset, Birmingham, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire.
Dr Taylor described the new MPs' group as "crucial".
"It is the sort of group that should liaise with the National Flood Forum very closely," he added.
"We will be able to support the forum and give it some teeth."
