AN English Oak tree has been planted in memory of the late Queen Mother in Droitwich's Lido Park.

The Mayor of Droitwich, Councillor Maureen Lawley, chose the tree and attended the planting ceremony yesterday afternoon, with her husband Coun Don Lawley.

They were joined by town clerk Graham Pharo and Lynn Stephens parks officer for Wychavon District Council, which provided the tree.

The plaque declares that it was planted on behalf of the people of Droitwich in April 2002, when the Queen Mum died.

"She chose an English Oak because she thought the Queen Mother was like an oak to England and this was a replacement for something the country has lost," said Coun Don Lawley.

"The plaque's dated from the day the Queen Mother died, rather than today," he said.
