DEAR EDITOR - John Weaver (Letters April 24) on the subject of hunting, hurriedly, illiberaly and perhaps unwisely dismisses the rights of minority groups.

With most of the opinion polls making quite clear that the majority have no wish to see hunting banned or to criminalise their fellow citizens for following a traditional way of life, it is in fact the ant-hunting movement that now finds itself a minority.

Mr Weaver claims that fox hounds are trained by sending them hare coursing.

This is a most wild and inaccurate statement.

Even the extreme Hunt Saboteurs Association have never claimed this.

It would be totally illogical to train a foxhound to hunt a hare when it is required to catch a fox.

With 65 per cent of rural vets supporting the continuation of hunting, on animal welfare grounds, clearly there is no case for a ban.
